Guides for People Thinking About a Pool

Written for homeowners rather than for search engines, and sourced — every regulatory claim here links to the official source it came from and the date we last checked it.

Why we wrote these

Most pool-industry content exists to rank, not to inform, and a great deal of it is recycled from other pool-industry content.

The result is a category where the same wrong things get repeated for years. Safety requirements quoted from a superseded version of the statute. Setback figures copied between contractor sites until nobody knows which city they came from. Confident claims about gunite versus shotcrete that no one can support. Price ranges invented to look authoritative.

We took a different approach. Where a claim is legal or regulatory, it is traced to the primary source — the California legislature, the Energy Commission, the Contractors State License Board, the Department of Water Resources, or the city or county that actually issues the permit — and every guide carries those sources with the date we last confirmed them. Where we could not verify something, it is not here.

Where a claim is about building pools, it comes from building them on this coast, and we have tried to be specific enough to be useful and honest enough to be worth reading.

Planning

Before you call anyone: what to decide, what it costs, and how to tell a good builder from a confident one.

Building

What actually happens, how long it takes, and the technical decisions that matter.

Local

Permits, climate and ground conditions specific to the Monterey Bay area.

Owning

Running a pool once it exists, on this coast, without wasting water or money.
