A few inches of water over a flat shelf is, per square foot, the most used part of most family pools — and the feature people most often wish they had made bigger.

Why the shallowest part gets used the most
A tanning ledge solves a problem swimming pools otherwise have: it lets you be in the water without being in the water.
On a shelf you can sit in a chair with your feet covered, put a toddler somewhere they can stand, cool off without committing to a swim, or lie down in three inches of water and read. That is a different activity from swimming, and it is the one that actually happens most afternoons.
It matters more on this coast than it does inland. When the air is sixty-eight and breezy, full immersion in a pool is a decision; sitting on a sun-warmed ledge in shallow water is not. A shelf extends the number of days a pool gets used, which is the same argument as the spa from the opposite direction.
The shallow water also warms faster than the rest of the pool, because there is less of it over a surface catching sun. On a cool afternoon the ledge is noticeably the warmest place in the pool.
Getting the dimensions right
Most regrets about a tanning ledge are about size and depth, not about having one.
- DepthShallow enough to sit in a chair with your feet under water and deep enough to lie in. Too shallow and it is a wet step; too deep and a chair floats and a toddler cannot stand.
- Length and widthBig enough for two loungers side by side is the threshold people are happy with. A shelf sized for one becomes contested.
- Where the sun isA ledge in shade from two o’clock is a wasted feature. Place it where the afternoon sun lands, which is a design decision and not a default.
- EntryA shelf makes a natural, gentle entry into the pool, which is genuinely useful for older swimmers and anyone unsteady on steps.
- Umbrella sleeveA sleeve cast into the shelf takes a shade umbrella. It costs almost nothing at build time and is impossible afterwards.
- BubblersLow bubblers set into the shelf are the single best value water feature for a family, and they need plumbing during rough-in.
- The trade-offEvery square foot of shelf is a square foot not available to swim in. On a small lot that is a real choice, and worth making deliberately.
Tanning ledge questions
What is the difference between a Baja shelf and a tanning ledge?
Nothing. Baja shelf, tanning ledge, sun shelf and sun deck all describe the same thing: a broad, shallow flat area inside the pool. Builders use whichever term their region favours.
Can a Baja shelf be added to an existing pool?
It is structural gunite, so adding one means cutting into the existing shell, tying in new steel and re-shooting that section — real construction, and realistically a job to combine with a remodel rather than do on its own.
Is it safe for small children?
A shelf is the part of a pool a small child can stand in, which is useful, but it is still water and it is still a pool. California’s pool safety requirements apply to the pool as a whole, and a shelf is not a substitute for a barrier or supervision.
Do I need special furniture?
In-pool loungers and chairs are made for shallow water and are worth buying rather than putting patio furniture in the pool — ordinary metal furniture corrodes quickly in chlorinated water, and faster still in salt air.
Will it make my pool feel smaller?
It will make the swimmable area smaller, which is a different thing. In a large pool nobody notices. In a compact yard it is a genuine trade against swimming length, and we will lay both options out at design rather than assume.
